Types of TMJ Surgery

Surgery for TMJ disorders vary based on the patient’s condition and any underlying issues. Any TMJ surgical procedure typically involves the administration of general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The type of anesthesia used will be determined by your surgeon.

Arthroscopy

This minimally invasive procedure begins with a small incision near the TMJ. A thin tube with a camera is then inserted to see the joint. This allows a surgeon to assess the joint’s condition, remove any debris in the joint, and can even enable them to perform minor repairs.

Arthrocentesis

In this procedure, a needle is inserted into the joint space to help irrigate and flush out the joint using a sterile solution, reducing inflammation, removing debris, and improving joint function.

Joint Replacement (TMJ Total Joint Replacement)

If the TMJ is severely damaged, it may necessitate a total joint replacement. The damaged joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint made from materials such as metal or plastic. This life-changing surgery drastically improves the lives of patients who are severely impaired by their TMJ disorder.

Repositioning Surgery

To correct misalignment issues, repositioning surgery may be utilized to adjust the jaw’s position. By improving the alignment and structure of the jaw, pain associated with TMJ disorder is reduced and joint function is enhanced.
